It’s time to recognize our active military!

My name is Leonard Pitts. In support of the USO I will be delivering to the White House on Friday, July 1, 2001, a proposed Resolution that recognizes the Nation’s active military. I have walked over 500 – miles from my hometown of Clinton, S.C. to Washington, D.C. Click on the image to zoom in.

There are currently over 2.5 million men and women who serve and protect our Country each and every day. It is time for “We” – fellow Americans, to recognize these brave men and women.

We have a day that recognizes our Veterans and fallen Heroes. We feel it is fitting to also recognize our active troops and we hope you agree.

We have the support of the USO and all six Congressional districts in the State of South Carolina to include Senator Jim DeMint and Graham. We also have the support of North Carolina Senator Kay Hagan.

Furthermore, we have received additional proclamations from the Mayor of Greensboro – North Carolina, Mecklenburg County – North Carolina and Halifax County – Virginia.

Day 24:Stafford, VA to Arlington, VA!!!! 36 miles

Today will be my longest trek of this journey. I decided to rest/recover yesterday, day 23. My body has really taken a beaten these last few weeks. I do not feel my best today but I will make it. Thank you Ruby Tuesday’s and Chili’s for a wonderful meal yesterday. I did not get a chance to take photos @ Chili’s because they were so busy.

I left Stafford around 5:30 a.m. this morning anxiously awaiting on any new found adventures.
It was early a.m. and there really was not a lot going on. Here’s a photo of ceramic soldiers.
Oh look, now here’s a sign that lets me know I am still in the South.
The National museum of Marine Corps.
WOW!! I just came across this amazing statue. It’s called IWO JIMA. This statue is so detailed.
As I continue my journey towards Arlington, I see more and more sites of patriotism. Too many to post. However, I did cross one that I believe sums up the way I feel.
Then out of nowhere, Washington -29 miles, on a big sign painted in green with white writing. I could not believe it…I have traveled so far and on foot. It was at this point that I knew this journey will come to a conclusion soon. I will save my final thoughts for later.
By now my body had really started aching. My feet, chest, neck and to top it off I was dealing with a cold. I made a commitment to myself that I was going to make it and I will.
I took a photo of a man who was looking at me below. I was on the bridge the separates Stafford County and Fairfax County.
Then it happened, I got on the Interstate by mistake. We all know that walking on the Interstate is not allowed.
This accident turned out to be the most exciting event of the day. I was really terrified because cars were going so fast. There were cars headed South bound and North Bound. I must admit it was a little exciting. Ok, so this is where it all turns from funny to serious to funny.
A highway patrolman pulled up. I could have sworn all the cars on the interstate stopped and were looking directly at me. The patrolman gets out of his car and casually walks over to me with this perplexed smile on his face. He says to me “hello sir, may I ask where are you headed?” I tell where I was headed. He looks at me and asked me another question, “Are you taking photos of people?” He still has this smirk of a smile on his face. Picture this: A black man dressed in a bright yellow hat, arm bands, leg bands and a bright yellow shirt walking on the freeway taking photos. Would you call the cops if you saw this?

Before I answered his questions I asked him if I was on hwy 1? To sum this story up he said no. I took some video.
After all the fun was over, Trooper Sullivan drove me back to hwy 1 and we estimated where I would have been if I had not taken a wrong turn. That was so much fun. If you would like to hear all the details let me know. It is very funny.
I am so close, Washington – 14 miles
I finally made it to my destination!
My final walk will only be 6 miles. I walked to Washington, D.C.

Day 23: Stafford, VA; A day of recovery

Today, day 23, will be a day of recovery for me. Can I still continue? Yes. This is not a competition nor am I trying to prove a point to anyone. Listen and Listen well. When God “suggest” you do something do it.! If it is truly coming from God, He has already prepared your way. In my opinion, no….the fact at hand is this; if it came from God it will be perfect in every aspect. I am not telling you the journey will not get rough.

From day one I have been telling you this vision came from God. Our active military and their families need to know we support them and will be there for them until everyone comes home. I am not telling you the road will not get rough. The first two days of this journey were the hottest days of the year so far. I practically dehydrated the 2nd day. Go back and look at my day 2 post. People ask me all the time if I ever felt like quitting. I tell them quitting is not an option for me.

I let the entire world know God told me to walk 500 miles. Why he chose me, I could not tell you. I have my theologies but we all know that God’s plan is far different from ours.

I will tell you this. If I fail it is because God failed me!!! That’s right I said it! He knows how I feel. I am being bold like Joshua did in the bible. When Joshua sent his army to battle a much smaller army and they got their butts kicked. Joshua went to God and basically said “God, what are you going to do? They just made you look like a fool!” What did God do? If you have not read this you really need to check it out.

There is so much I want to tell you but right now is not the time. I do want to say this, never give up. Remove any negativity from your life and trust God. Wait…. Trust him with the little things first to see how that works out for you.

Yesterday was a long and tough day for me. My day started when I left the Sleep Inn in Spotsylvania, VA. Kudos again Choice Hotels. I will post only photos and a video from yesterday. I am hoping to go to Quantico today.

I left pretty early because the walk was a little less than 20 miles today. I was hurting and I knew if I left earl I will get there in about 8 hours which included taking a total of 1.5 hours in breaks. Wrong! The day ended up being 12 hours. For the last few days It has been nothing by mental for me. We all know what happens when you start having mental issues.

Satin has a chance to come in and put thoughts in your mind. I had to battle all day with the “thought” of giving up. To give you an example this is what was going on in my mind; “what are you doing man! These people are looking at you like you are some crazed pervert. Why don’t you take today off because you have injured yourself? Do you think anyone cares about the military? Why is the USO getting all this money and you are getting nothing? Go ahead and go back to the hotel and start over tomorrow.”

I had to deal with this all day long!!! I went through this for one single purpose and I am supposed to share with you. If you were to go back from day 1 all the way to right now, you will not see jone post making mention about satin.

I hope this helps someone because it sure is helping me. Satin only shows up during the time when you are most vulnerable. When you are in a rough spot in your marriage, when your kids are acting up, when the bill collectors are harassing you, when things out of the blue pop up on your computer or when you are driving down the road minding your own business and you see a huge billboard advertising beer and lets not forget that call phone…text messages.

Please believe me when I tell you this. There is nothing in this world you cannot do! Do not let anyone tell you that you cannot do something. Anything can be done as long as you prepare for it. Always count the cost. Research, Prepare and Commit.

Day 22: Fredericksburg to Stafford, VA!

Today is the 22nd day of my journey. I am so sore this morning till I can barely walk. I think I have pulled a muscle in my chest. I have two big nasty blisters on my feet and both legs are begging me to give them rest.

I do not know why but I am supposed to keep going. My thoughts for today were to stay here for an extra day, go to the hospital and get myself checked out. It seems like the closer I get to Washington the more difficult it is to keep moving. This is not me, not my strength. Please believe this.

Yesterday started out a routine day. I walked through the very, very small town of Doswell, VA. Doswell is so small, well…the pictures below tell the story.

I also walked through a very remote area!

Highway 1 is a long highway. It was very scenic with a lot of history. If you ever have the chance to visit this highway please do. It runs parallel to Interstate 95. I have had the opportunity to see just how beautiful the country is by walking at 3 mph.

About my 6th mile, I started to ache really bad. I was almost at the point of hitching a ride. I made it!!! What a feeling it was!

The body is so amazing. I have learned so much and God has revealed to me that I can do all things as long as I trust in him.

When I finally arrived at my destination for the day the traffic was horrendous! I do not know why but Virginia do not believe in crosswalks. It was dangerous crossing the street.

I meet this homeless lady and her dog Roo. We had a nice conversation and she let me take a couple pictures.

At last, I arrive at the hotel, Sleep Inn and Suites. I was greeted by Connor who was very accommodating. Thanks Connor! If you have not stayed at one of the Choice Hotels, you are really missing out. They have a great special. Stay two separate nights, get the third night free.

Once I got checked in I went to Chick-Fil-A. They donated my meals for the day. What an awesome team! They waited on me hand and foot. They treated me like royalty yall. People were staring like “who is this guy?” Here are some photos and a cool video.

My day ended with a hot, hot shower!!

In the news. I am really sore this evening. I will post in the morning.

Day 20: Glen Allen to Doswell, VA! Plans changed

First, let me start by saying yesterday, today and tomorrow would not be possible without the sacrifice and commitment our men and women in uniform who serve and protect our country each and every day. On behalf of the entire nation, thank you!

When I woke up this morning I was unsure what I was supposed to do today. I have not talked to any media outlet at the time. As a matter of fact, I thought we were going to meet Saturday. I went to God and asked what shall I do. Can you believe he did not answer? So, I did the only thing I knew how to do. I waited… that’s it!, that’s it!, I was supposed to “be still”. If you look at my previous blog from today I said I was going to play the day hour by hour.

First, I had a meeting with Mr. Frank Kelly, Brand Performance Consultant for Choice Hotels International. Yeah, he really did try to give me his cologne. Finally, the media started calling. They came to me!! I said they came to me! That meant I did not have to walk to Richmond (10 miles). The Richmond Times Dispatch did a story. I think the story will run tomorrow. I will post. WTVR-CBS did an interview and it ran today. You can watch it by going to their website @

Before I got on the road I had the opportunity to take a couple more photos with the Comfort Suites staff. Chad, thanks alot for all you generosity!!!

My new route for today:

It was so cloudy out today. I just knew I was going to catch a storm. Guess what? No rain, at least on me.

What was really monumental for me was when I approached the historical highway #1.

I could not believe I was actually getting ready to walk this historical highway. My friend Kim walked it a few weeks earlier.

Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you guys, yesterday I took a laxative and I thought I had finished all my business. Less than two hours into my walk, my stomach started bubbling. The video says it all.

I came across a Harley Davidson cycle shop, they let me use their bathroom and I was on my way.

Mr. Kevin Morley, staff photographer for Richmond Times- Dispatch caught up with me. Mr. Morley is the epitome of what a photographer should be. I cannot wait to see his photos. I tried to get him to walk with me, he declined, lol. He does the greatest Forest Gump inpressions.

One I finally got finished with Mr. Morley I was on my way. Hwy 1 is the perfect hwy to walk. It’s mostly straight with a few hills. I took advantage of this and power walked a little. Man, I had fun!
Along my route I took a few pictures for your review:
When I finally arrived at Doswell Comfort Suites I was greeted by the wonderful Comfort Suites staff.

Again, the service was subperb! Be sure to tell your friends and family when they are visiting Kings Dominion to book thier rooms @ Doswell Comfort Suites;

I met a Stephen Quintero and his friend. They did the honor of signing my vest. For those of you who do not know, We have a vest for each State we travel through. These vest will be signed by our White House administration.

To end this wonderful day Choice Hotel treated me to dinner @ IL Castello Italian Restaurant & Pizza.

My dinner included stuffed founder, mixed veggies, salad, rolls, sweet tea, chicken wings(appetizer) and berry crumb cheesecake for dessert! Yummy.

I am so tired, It is important for me to post my blogs everyday. This is not about me. This is my sacrifice to our troops and their families. Please donate. Click on the USO logo. All donations go directly to the USO. May God continue to richly bless you and your family and God bless the United States of America!

Day 20: Back to Richmond then to Golansville

It’s time to return to the trail. I am finally getting some rain. It looks like I will be returning to Richmond this morning. I try to be sure I am still in God’s will. Today will be played on an hour by hour basis. Who knows, I may end up in New York. This is so exciting. Oh yeah, If you have never stayed at any of the Choice Hotels you are missing out. They have this great deal going on right now. Stay two seperate nights, get the 3rd night FREE! That’s right FREE! Take a look at this quick video I just made.

Hey everybody!
Time for another quick update! Everything I post is the absolute truth. I do all the crazy videos because I want you to feel this journey I am taking. I am a living and breathing testimony. Everything with God is possible! You only have to trust him. I know, I know, a lot of you have been broken and probably think why does God allow you to go through certain things. “God just put this word in my spirit.” This message is intended for someone who will read this today.

I want to talk to you. Call me today. Block your number. I do not want to know your name. Call me @ 864.449.6197.I really need to talk to you before you do something you will regret. Anyway, I met with Mr. Frank Kelly, Regional Director for Choice Hotels. Before I get into this story there is something I need to share with you. Mr. Kelly smelled so good this morning. I complimented him on his cologne.

To make a long story short, he offered me his cologne! I declined of course. He then told me he received it as a gift from his girlfriend. When he told me that I thouight to myself “Man, you give that away you better not tell her.” Fellows, It is my experience, when a woman give you cologne she really loves the scent of that paticuliar cologne and when you put it on and you wear it around her, good goobly goo!
One thing I know about women, they like a well dressed and a great smelling man! So, Mr. Kelly, thank you sir for the kind geasture but that gift has so much value for you.

You see folks, that’s the kind of stuff I am talking about. My lodging has been taking care of all the way to Arlington, VA. My route has changed a little. My next stop is Comfort Suites at Kings Dominion. Yipee!!!! This is so exciting!

Day 18-19: Glen Allen, VA!!!!

I left Sleep Inn & Suites Harbour Pointe yesterday. I did not want to leave this place!

If you have never stayed @ any of the Choice Hotels….Comfort Inn, Comfort Suites, Quality Inn, Sleep Inn, Clarion, Main Stay, etc.. I tell you what, click on the link to visit their website. Tell them the “Walking Man” sent you.

On my way towards Chamberlayne, well, I was going to Chamberlayne because that was my next destination. I ended up going towards Richmond.

How many of you know, God’s plan is different from our plan? Before I left the hotel Mr. Patel, the General Manager said to me “if there is anything else I could do for you let us know, “anything,” First, let me try to get you to understand something. I cannot tell you exactly where the scripture is in the bible. I believe it’s in Malicah. It goes something like this…”Trust me, and if you do I will pour you out a blessing you will not be able to contain.”

When Mr. Patel said this to me my mind started racing. I did not know what to say, only thing I said was “thanks and I will.” As I was walking up Hull St/360 towards Richmond, by the way, the traffic was horrendous! I had to be extremely careful. It seemed like everyone was in a hurry.

The Lord put it in my spirit, safety first. I walked several more miles then I had to pee-pee. I go to this hotel, I use the bathroom and then it happened. God spoke to me and said “you better call Mr. Patel.” I thought to myself “I think I better call Mike.” Since it will not be possible for me to make my destination before dark and I started walking late.” I called Mr. Patel and asked him for a ride. Wait for it….. Ok, here comes the good stuff. Wait for it…. What I failed to tell you earlier, Mr. Patel made arrangements for me to stay in another one of their hotels, Comfort Suites. Listen to me and listen to me good!

You never know where your blessing is going to come from so you “Better” be ready! Some of you may be staring your blessing in the face but you are too “stiffed neck” to see it! FYI, do not worry about keeping up with the Jones. At the end of the day you have only one provider!

Before I finish my story about Mr. Patel I met some really nice folk who supports our troops and the USO. I sincerely hope you guys had a great time on your vacation.

Ok, Mr. Patel picked me up in his personal car. When he arrived…well, all I can say is this. He made me feel like I was waiting for my car at a five diamond, winner of 6 JD Power awards resort/hotel. Only difference was I was not driving, he was!!!!!!

So I’m standing there in total awe. He gets out of the car, runs…runs around to my side, opens my door, puts me in and then puts my backpack in the back seat!! I could not believe it!

Picture this if you will: You are in the car with the CEO for the company you work for and he/she is treating you like royalty. They continually ask you are you ok, do you need anything? What do you do or what do you say? That’s what I meant earlier. Get ready! Read Luke 2:52. Ok. I am in the car with this man, alone, and he is driving me to the next destination, Comfort Suites, one of their hotels. Please click on the link below to take a tour of these wonderful hotels.

Drum roll…..(it’s time for some ebonics) yall gots to do batter then tat! Can I get a drum roll please….. got dang it, move out tha way, give me them sticks, I will drum roll myself (me going crazy on the drums)!

Mr. Mike Patel, General Manager, Regional Manager, Manager of Managers said to me………….wait fer it :)… He said.. Ok, he said; “We would like to provide your lodging for the duration of your trip.
We think what you are doing is commendable and we support the troops, their families and the USO and if there is anything we can do to make your journey more at ease do not hesitate to let me know.” All I can say… “thank you.” Now folks, you can’t see the tears coming down my eyes so I am doing my best to make you feel the way I feel with these words.

I had no idea who or what the USO was until Last November. God has put me on this path to the White House to meet certain people and organizations. Think of it like this: my journey is like a ladder. The more steps I take the higher I get. As I move up the ladder, the task becomes more difficult. The only way I can reach the top is by having a support system. You cannot measure the support by how much is given but by ability.

I need to share something with you. There have been days when I say to myself “what am I doing…my toes are jacked up, I have this huge blister on my heel, this has consumed all my time and to top it all off, I’m not being paid!” Why would you ask something of this magnitude from someone like me God, I ask? It’s Father’s day and I am 465 miles from home and my family.

Then I hear I calm voice in my spirit and it says this: “You have to die in order to live”

To try and put this in perspective for yall, our troops and their families sacrifice (die) each and every day so that you and me can have the freedom to (live).

Please help me support our troops by donating to the USO. Is your freedom worth at least $10? Please click on the USO logo to donate today.

This awesome journey is almost over for me but the pursuit of happiness never will.

Please donate today
